St Patrick statue mark II

Efforts are under way in County Meath to have a new statue of St Patrick installed on the Hill of Tara. The original statue was removed last year by the Office of Public Works for refurbishment but was found to have deteriorated beyond repair. Rathfeigh Historical Society has acted as secretary of a Tara Committee in negotiations with the OPW with regard to the installation of a new statue. The Tara Committee has recently requested a meeting with the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht to discuss in detail his agreement to install a new statue of the patron saint. Rathfeigh Historical Society are also considering the possibility of inaugurating an event on the Hill of Tara, possibly in association with Slane Historical Society, to mark this year’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Meanwhile the society are still looking for any information regarding the installation of the original statue. They believe it probably was installed in 1895 to commemorate the centenary of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth.
