Centenary of the Picture Postcard—Rare Dublin Views

To celebrate the centenary of the picture postcard in Ireland, the Guinness Hopstore is hosting an exhibition of over 1,300 postcards showing rare Dublin views dating from the 1890s-–1950s. The exhibition was opened in January and runs until the end of July 1995. Some very rare and unusual specimens dating from pre-1900 are included, some made from wood, leather, celluloid, aluminium and even peat. Many were printed in Ireland specifically for the Irish market. The exhibition has been put together by Seamus Kearns who unintentionally started his collection of approximately 40,000 cards in the early 1960s due to his interest in stamps and unusual post marks. He has selected rare views of the Dublin city and county, particularly those that have changed dramatically over the last century.
