Picturing the Word

Picturing the Word

An information pack, intended to maximise the educational value of school visits to Trinity College’s award-winning Book of Kells exhibition ‘Picturing the Word’, is now available from TCD Library. The pack provides an introduction to the Book of Kells and to the society that produced it, illustrating life in Early Christian Ireland, the monastic system, the scribes and the artists responsible for the Book.

‘The Picturing the Word exhibition has become a very popular attraction for school parties and the Library is anxious that young visitors get the greatest educational benefit from it’, said Sue Parkes of Trinity College’s Department of Teacher Education. ‘The pack contains material that is of value before, during and after the visit, giving an overview of the Book of Kells itself and of Trinity College’s Old Library, where the Book and other treasures are housed. It asks pupils a number of questions and indicates where in the exhibition they can find the answers. It also encourages them to look carefully at the materials on display and makes some suggestions for practical work’.

The pack contains a poster, illustrated cards, a teacher’s guide and worksheets. It is available on

request to teachers and schools.
