In order to promote a new MA course in Local History (which will commence in October)a seminar and exhibition on ‘The Practice of History’ was held in the Boole Library basement at UCC on Saturday 23 March. Organised jointly by the Department of History and Boole Library Special Collections, the seminar was designed to give practical guidance in the use of historical evidence to anyone interested in researching and writing history for themselves. Two lecturers from the History Department, David Edwards and Kenneth Nicholls, and Helen Davis of the Library, gave advice on the historian’s craft, and a wide variety of sources, ranging from sixteenth-century state papers to nineteenth-century estate maps, were displayed. On what was a miserable cold wet day nearly fifty people turned out to attend the morning and afternoon sessions, and they kept their hosts on their toes with a stream of questions and queries.
