Daniel Noel Kissane, a patron of History Ireland, passed away on 1 May 2024.
Noel worked for over 30 years in the National Library of Ireland, where he held the positions of Education Officer and Keeper of Manuscripts. His doctorate was for his edition of the Metrical Life of St Brigid. Among his many publications were The Irish face (Dublin, 1986), Parnell: a documentary history (Dublin, 1994), The Irish Famine (Dublin, 1996), St Brigid of Kildare: life, legend and cult (Dublin, 2017) and Kerry from maps and charts (Dublin, 2024).
Originally from Ballylongford, Co. Kerry, his early education was at Asdee National School. He then attended boarding-school at the Mill Hill Fathers, Freshford, Co. Kilkenny, before continuing on to University College Dublin, where he achieved his doctorate. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.
