Golden jubilees for Donegal Historical Society and Clare Archaeological & Historical Society

This year marks the golden jubilee for the County Donegal Historical Society (Cumann Seanchais Dhún Na nGall). Founded in 1960 by the late Chris McDonagh from Ballymote, County Roscommon, the society is now one of the largest in the country with over 870 members. The society publishes the Donegal Annual and throughout the year organises functions, meetings, outings and lectures. The current President is Mairéad Dunlevy, the Director of Collins Barracks Museum in Dublin, and the main jubilee celebrations are planned for later in the year. Membership is worldwide and great care is taken to assist in any way with enquires from all new comers. Undoubtedly the success of the society may, in no small part, be attributed to trojan work of Kathleen Emerson, who since 1960 has been Honorary Secretary. History Ireland would like to congratulate Donegal Historical Society as well as Clare Archaeological & Historical Society who this year are having their jubilee conference with the same theme as the original conference of twenty-five years ago.
