Happy birthday!

As History Ireland begins its fifth year of publication, down in Tipperary a local history journal celebrates ten years of existence. The 1997 Tipperary Historical Journal will be a special tenth anniversary number, with a comprehensive forty-page survey of the county’s historiography by local historian Denis Marnane. As usual, the journal specialises in the period 1900-1923: an account of the historic 1917 Sinn Féin Ard Fheis (where de Valera replaced Griffith) by a Tipperary priest who was present; an analysis of the Third Tipperary Brigade’s guerrilla campaign of 1919-21 by Kate O’Dwyer (UCG); and an account of a chilling Civil War murder involving the future General Michael Costello by the editor, Marcus Bourke. Nenagh historian Nancy Murphy traces the career of a neglected Tipperary GAA pioneer. Kilkenny historian Edward Law describes a Masonic burial 200 years ago. There are four major archaeology articles, another ‘Famine 150’ section of over fifty pages, and twelve pages of book reviews. Excellent value for £10!
