Fermanagh Reprint
The rising cost of local history publications on the second hand/antiquarian market is a constant source of annoyance and frustration to those of us who enjoy this area of study but cannot afford the prices being asked. It is always welcome, then, when out-of-print publications, in particular source books, are reprinted at an affordable price.
A recent addition to these has been the reprint of John O’Donovan’s Letters from County Fermanagh by Belleek historian, John B. Cunningham. The poor quality first edition produced by Fr Michael O’Flanagan in the 1930s costs at least £45 in the antiquarian bookshops, but Cunningham’s is available for £5.50. This is not simply a reprint, however, but a reworking of O’Flanagan’s typescript. Cunningham has used his own extensive knowledge of County Fermanagh history to add explanatory footnotes to the text and an index, making it an even more valuable source for the local historian and more attractive for the general reader. It is available from St Davog’s Press, Belleek, County Fermanagh.
