This one-day conference, organised by the Irish in Europe 1600-1800 Project at NUI Maynooth on Saturday 11 December 1999, is intended as a showcase for ongoing research by new and established historians on aspects of the Irish emigration to Europe in the early modern period. The lectures, which focus largely on France and Spain, will present the fruits of recent archival research and attempts to contextualise Irish European emigration as part of the modernisation of Ireland and its evolution as part of the European system. Lectures explore the activities and achievements of Irish people abroad, their contact networks in host countries and the contribution of these networks to linking even the remotest parts of Ireland to the centres of European cultural, political and economic innovation.
