Sir,
—This photograph has defied identities and definition despitepublication in County Wexford newspapers and submission to the NationalLibrary. Its importance is evident by the formality in pose, thepresence of two bishops in silk hats, George Noble, Count Plunkett, andone other identified, active, influential but unobtrusivenationalist—the gentleman in the back row at the extreme right. He isJohn English, proprietor and managing director of English PrintingWorks, Anne Street, Wexford, the publishers, amongst others, of theCapuchin Annual, the Rockwell College Annual, Seanchas Árd Mhaca, andthe Journal of the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society. Thefirm, noted for superb quality, is no longer there but this photographwas amongst a number that survived. It appears to have been taken atDublin’s Mansion House (St Enda’s, Rathfarnham? [Ed.]) c. 1917–23. Wewould be grateful for any information.
—Yours etc.,
